When you plan the strength area of a gym, the first big decision is the mix of plate-loaded and selectorized machines. Both do the same basic job - guiding a lifter through a movement against resistance - but they suit different members and different parts of the floor.
Plate-loaded machines
On a plate-loaded machine the lifter adds weight plates by hand. The load can go as heavy as the plates you own, which is why experienced lifters and bodybuilders prefer them. With no weight stack, cables or selector pins, there are fewer moving parts to maintain.
Selectorized machines
A selectorized machine has a built-in weight stack and a pin. Changing the load takes a second, so these machines are quick to use, easy for beginners and ideal for busy hours when members move from one station to the next.
How to choose the mix
- Member profile: a general-fitness crowd leans towards selectorized; a strength-focused crowd leans towards plate-loaded.
- Space: plate-loaded machines need room for plate storage next to them.
- Budget: plan the complete floor first, then balance the two types across muscle groups.
Most commercial gyms end up with both. If you are unsure about the right mix for your space, share your gym size and budget with us and we will recommend a layout.
